The first thing that you notice about the tent is how small it packs. You can see the exact specs for the tent at Wechsel website here. The Pathfinder is a three season, one person tent consisting of a main tent body, a fly, and 3 poles. With my new (used) Pathfinder in hand I opted to skip the hammock and tarp and see what life would be like in a small solo shelter. After donating this item to me, Dave contacted Wechsel about my trip and his personal donation, and they gladly provided Dave with a brand new Pathfinder to replace the one he had given me. When my friend Dave got word of this, he offered up his beloved Wechsel Pathfinder solo shelter, thinking that my plan of using just a tarp and hammock insufficient on such a trip. My initial plan was to go with the hammock and tarp, skipping the bivy all together.

Since I would be carrying everything either on the bike or in a trailer, I knew that my decision would have an impact on the overall weight of my kit. The hammock was given to me in North Carolina and quickly became one of my favorite ways to sleep when trees or poles permitted.Īs I approached the Bike Around America tour, my choice of shelter was being driven first by weight and then stealth. The Atlantic trip required stealth, and thus the choice to go with a bivy.

Each of these trips called for a different form of shelter, with the Alaska paddle needing a bomber tent that could survive all kinds of weather in very remote and forbidding lands. The following year, as I traveled up the Atlantic Coast, I used a Bibler Tripod Bivy and a ENO hammock, both in conjunction with an Oware sil-nylon tarp. For my initial trip up the Inside Passage to Alaska, I used a North Face four season mountaineering tent, the Mountain 25 (A Bomber Tent!). For the past 7900 miles I have traveled with several different forms of shelter.
